The Southwest Side: Chicago's best kept secret!

Why is the Southwest side Chicago's best kept secret? Its quiet residential areas are within minutes of downtown, lower housing prices let you buy more for your money, parks and schools are sprinkled abundantly throughout, and its cultural diversity offers "downtown" quality entertainment and shopping.

Chicago Lawn

Chicago Lawn is a colorful canvas of ethnic diversity that includes people of African American, Latino, Lithuanian and Middle Eastern heritage. Because of this, Chicago Lawn's major business district on West 63rd and 71st Streets offers a wide range of ethnic stores and restaurants.

Although home to light industry, Chicago Lawn is primarily residential, and here you'll find a mixture of wood frame and brick homes ? many of them "Chicago-style" bungalows. Chicago Lawn is still one of the most affordable neighborhoods on the Southwest side, and with its neatly-kept lawns and quiet residential areas, it's becoming the neighborhood of choice for many people.

But Chicago Lawn has more going for it than just solidly-built, affordable homes. The area boasts an abundance of schools and parks, including Marquette Park, a 300-acre public park located right in the center of the neighborhood. Marquette Park is home to a 9-hole golf course, walking/running trails, soccer field, and putting green. Chicago Lawn residents also take advantage of outdoor ice skating in nearby West Lawn Park.

Many people live and work in Chicago Lawn. The area offers job opportunities in retail, at nearby Midway Airport, or in one of many industrial businesses. In fact, Chicago Lawn is home to Nabisco Bakery - the world's largest bakery - which produces more than 22 million Oreo cookies a day.

Need to head downtown? Transportation from Chicago Lawn is a breeze. Grab a CTA bus and hop on the Orange Line and you'll be downtown in minutes. If you're interested in getting more home for your money, in a neighborhood that meets all your lifestyle needs, look no further than Chicago Lawn.

West Lawn

People looking for a neighborhood that offers the perfect balance between quiet residential areas and convenient shopping find what they're looking for in West Lawn.

Take a drive down West Lawn's residential, tree-lined streets and you might find you feel like you're already home. The majority of the houses in West Lawn are single-family "Chicago-style" brick bungalows that were built during the 1950s or earlier. The older construction offers hardwood floors, custom-built woodwork, and - in some cases - original fireplaces.

But quiet living is not all West Lawn has to offer ? the majority of residential areas are walking distance from bustling shopping districts. Visit the Ford City Shopping Center, a major outdoor mall, and you'll have your choice of many nationally-recognized stores, including Carson Pirie Scott, Sears, Old Navy and Marshall's. The mall was built in 1960 on a site that formerly housed a manufacturing plant that built airplane engines during World War II and the Korean War. Nowadays, the mall is just a fun shopping experience.

Many residents choose to live and work in West Lawn. The area offers job opportunities in retail, at nearby Midway Airport, or at a large, modern office complex. Rather work for industry? Tootsie Roll's headquarters and factory are located in West Lawn, where they've been rolling out that wildly-popular candy since the 1960s.

Maybe you have a job in the city ? or you just like to head downtown every now and again to catch an event. No problem! Grab a CTA bus and hop on the Orange Line and you'll be downtown in minutes.

Thinking you'd rather find your entertainment close to home? West Lawn is home to many diverse cultures and there are plenty of places for fun ? including the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, ethnic restaurants and stores along 63rd Street, a large movie theater complex, and an outdoor skating rink.

Is West Lawn the neighborhood that truly offers something for everyone? Check it out for yourself and see!

West Elsdon

Because West Elsdon is one of the most residential neighborhoods on the Southwest side, you might never guess that it grew during the 19th century because of its close proximity to rail lines. But even as industry sprouted up all around it during the 20th century, West Elsdon maintained its residential flavor. Today, West Elsdon still has little industry, offering its residents peaceful living in solidly-built, single-family brick homes.

Maybe you're looking for a quiet residential area but still need easy access to downtown Chicago? West Elsdon is within minutes of downtown via CTA bus routes and the Orange Line.

And while mainly residential, West Elsdon does offer a variety of businesses that will meet your basic shopping needs, such as West Lawn Finer Food and Midway Square Mall, which is home to more than a dozen retail, restaurant and service industry businesses.

For those times you have larger shopping needs or want to experience some nightlife, nearby neighborhoods, such as West Lawn and Chicago Lawn, offer ethnic restaurants, stores, and a large movie theater complex.

Perhaps physical recreation is more to your liking? Play a game of baseball at West Elsdon's Stronhacker Park, or check out Pasteur Park for in-line skating, a gym, and tennis courts.

If you're seeking peaceful, quiet living that's conveniently close to bigger, bustling areas, West Elsdon is a sure bet.

Gage Park

Gage Park offers solid family housing in two-story wood frame homes on its north side, and newer brick homes to the south. This neighborhood will stand out in your mind as one that is very well cared for, with its neatly-manicured lawns and well-kept homes sitting calmly on tree-lined streets. Houses run a range of styles, from Georgians built in the 1940s, to ranch houses built in the 1960s and 70s, to newer Cape Cods built in the past decade.

Historically, many Gage Park residents state that the neighborhood's affordable housing is one of its strongest selling points. Despite increasing housing prices in recent years, Gage Park still offers a lot of value for your dollar.

Small parks are scattered throughout Gage Park, and popular Senka Park offers volleyball and softball leagues, basketball camps, and a variety of other activities for the youngsters.

Like other Southwest side neighborhoods, Gage Park is within minutes of downtown via CTA buses and the Orange Line. In addition, many residents work at nearby Midway Airport or in neighboring communities, where retail, industrial and office job opportunities eliminate the need to commute downtown.

When you need a bit of nightlife and entertainment, nearby Chicago Lawn and West Lawn - just a short ride away - offer a wide range of ethnic stores and restaurants, in addition to shopping malls and a movie theater complex.

If you're looking for a quiet place to raise a family - or just plain want a quiet place - Gage Park fits the bill.
