Continuing their longstanding support for GSDC, SWOP, and NHS's anti-predatory lending - and now anti-foreclosure - work, Illinois House Speaker and 22nd District Rep. Michael Madigan and 13th Ward Ald. Frank Olivo recently engaged, with the support of our Keep Our Homes Coalition, in their own outeach campaign targeted at homeowners in trouble.
As a first step, Madigan and Olivo's Southwest Side constituents were sent a mailing outlining the Keep Our Homes Campaign (KOH) and warning residents of scams and "unscrupulous individuals" preying on homeowners facing foreclosure, falsely offering assistance for high upfront fees. (The KOH Campaign offers assistance for FREE) The mailing was in both Spanish and English.
Madigan and Olivo had the following to say in a note to residents:
(Download the entire mailing HERE) The mailing went out in late February, and already, we're seeing results: we've had a substantial uptick in calls from the West Lawn area. One essential element of the KOH campaign is getting individuals into home counseling. With all-important support from our local political leaders, we're achieving that goal and working towards another: a broad-based solution to the growing number of foreclosures in our community.
