COOP – Cooperative Education (a.k.a. ‘co-op’ or ‘work study’) is intended as a year-long, (at least from Fall through Spring) work based learning experience for our most promising CTE senior students.  COOP is designed to give on-the-job advanced skills training in a chosen CTE pathway. These seniors get out of school between 12pm to 1pm daily. This activity is at the Company’s expense.

WINTER INTERNSHIPS – This school year, the two-week winter break is from December 26, 2011 to January 6, 2012. Internships help CPS/CTE provide work ready students with an opportunity to apply their skills and participate in meaningful work with responsibility and accountability. Internships should challenge the student to apply and build on their academic, technical and employability skills. Company’s can request juniors or seniors for these opportunities. This activity is at the Company’s expense.

o JOB SHADOWS – This school year, the Job Shadow Day is March 14, 2012.  Job Shadows gives students a real-world one-day deep dive into a work environment where classroom learning comes alive in a new context. During the day, a student partners with an industry professional who serves as part coach, part teacher and part mentor. This activity is a safe and supportive way to provide students a window into the professional world working alongside a caring professional mentor.

SPRING BREAK INTERNSHIPS - This school year, the ONE-week spring break is from April 2, 2012 to April 6, 2012. Internships help CPS/CTE provide work ready students with an opportunity to apply their skills and participate in meaningful work with responsibility and accountability. Internships should challenge the student to apply and build on their academic, technical and employability skills. This activity is for CTE seniors. This activity is a CPS expense and pays up to 40 hours.(Technically, the 40 hours can also be worked anytime between March 1, 2012 and June 30, 2012)

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS - This school year, the summer internships begin June 25, 2012 and will last 5 or 6 weeks.  Internships help CPS/CTE provide work ready students with an opportunity to apply their skills and participate in meaningful work with responsibility and accountability. Internships should challenge the student to apply and build on their academic, technical and employability skills. This activity is primarily for CTE juniors. This activity is typically a CPS expense and MIGHT pay up to 100 or 120 hours total depending on available funding. If your Company has paid in the past, you will be asked to continue.

GUEST SPEAKERS – Speakers in the classroom can expand the mental boundaries of students who may not see themselves as an asset to theindustry, community or higher education.  In addition, speakers provide valuable cost-effective career exploration activities for the students and motivation.

INDUSTRY ADVISORY COUNCIL(IAC) – Participants will attend 3 council meetings per school year.  The first ones are in late October/early November 2011.  This group will review the programs  facilities, curricula and course material.  IAC members also make recommendations on improving these components based on the their industry expertise and provide targeted support to the program to drive the improvement process.

SITE VISITS – Provide students with career experiences outside the classroom to ground learning in a real-world context. It also provides a window for students into a career’s culture that is not possible within a school/classroom environment.
