Greater Southwest Development (GSDC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community development corporation that has actively contributed to residential, commercial, and industrial revitalization efforts in Southwest Chicago for thirty years. GSDC was formed in 1974 as a result of organizing efforts to hold banks accountable for the growing disinvestment in Chicago Lawn. At the time, the area was experiencing violent racial conflicts and GSDC's early efforts focused both on easing racial tension and stimulating economic investment. The area's population now reflects a diverse community, and GSDC's work with investors, governments entities, and local organizations to redevelop key business areas, generate new jobs, and stabilize the local housing market is largely responsible for the area's continued high level of economic investment. Throughout its history, GSDC has worked to combat disinvestment and reverse decline by positioning neighborhoods to compete for investment and maintain a mixed-income economy. In 2001, the organization earned the Community Development Corporation of the Year award from Chicago's Local Initiative Support Corporation. Former Chicago Housing Commissioner Jack Markowski heralded GSDC as the premier community development corporation in Chicago. In 2008, Bank of America honored GSDC as a "Neighborhood Builder" in honor of its longstanding commitment to and work on Chicago's Southwest Side. GSDC Board of Directors GSDC's success depends on the support and active participation of the people who live and work in the community we serve. GSDC is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors representing local residents and business owners. The Board's dedication and their personal commitment of time bring important neighborhood concerns and issues directly into the governing body of the organization.
