Developing Our Neighborhood
Greater Southwest Development Corporation (GSDC) is known for its strong community development track record. For three decades, the organization has worked to remove blight - constructing impressive commercial, industrial and housing development projects in its place.
Our newest project, a new site for the Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN)'s Health Clinic and Administrative Center, was completed last fall. This site transforms a former bank building into a full service medical clinic and a community center for IMAN's other projects.
GSDC also has several exciting community development concepts on the burner, such as:
- Re-anchoring the commercial area around 60th Street and Western Avenue with a new "Town Center" development
- Redeveloping older, blighted commercial structures along 63rd Street into artist living and work space
- Creating a nursing home near Churchview Senior Campus - Independent & Supportive Living Apartments - to complete the elderly continuum of care
- Pursuing the development of a Recreational Center and an Illinois Human Services office
Revitalizing neighborhoods can only be successful when people from all walks of life work together to reach common goals. This "short-list" of projects only begins to describe the work that GSDC, in cooperation with our community partners, is undertaking to help turn the vision of a strong, vital community into actual "bricks and mortar" projects.
Our past projects have covered a wide range of development projects, including:
- Developing a $16 million low-income elderly supportive living facility. This elegant building provides homes for frail seniors who need some assistance to live independently, such as medicine reminders, personal care, and three meals a day.
- Building two independent senior living facilities, one linked to a daycare and other small commercial businesses
- Establishing the Jewel-Osco on Western Ave., key to keeping 63rd & Western a vibrant retail district
- Attracting developers for a 10 screen Cineplex Odeon movie theater, also in the 63rd & Western area
Please email Harry Meyer, Deputy Director of Development, or call him at 773-436-1000 (extension 108), for more information about developing projects.
